Overtime Pay Calculator
Calculate regular earnings, overtime pay, and total gross wages for a pay period — with support for federal FLSA rules, California daily overtime, or custom thresholds.
About this calculator
This calculator computes gross pay for a pay period by splitting hours into regular, overtime (1.5×), and double-time (2×) buckets based on the applicable overtime rule, then multiplying each bucket by the correct rate. Federal FLSA rules require 1.5× for all hours over 40 per week. California adds daily overtime — 1.5× after 8 hours per day, 2× after 12, plus special rules for a 7th consecutive workday. The "Custom" mode lets you set your own weekly thresholds for any jurisdiction. The "Auto-split" mode calculates the correct hour breakdown from your total hours so you don't have to do the math manually.
Field explanations
- Hourly wage
- The employee's regular rate of pay per hour. FLSA overtime is based on the "regular rate," which may include certain bonuses and other compensation — not just the base hourly rate.
- Overtime rule
- Federal (FLSA) applies to most US employees and requires 1.5× for hours over 40/week. California applies stricter daily overtime on top of the weekly rule. Custom lets you set your own thresholds for other states or contract agreements.
- Total hours (auto-split)
- Enter the total hours worked and the calculator automatically divides them into regular, overtime, and double-time buckets based on the selected rule.
- Hours per day / days worked (California)
- California overtime is calculated daily. Enter the average hours worked each day and the number of days worked. If 7 days are worked consecutively, the 7th-day rules apply automatically.
- 1.5× and 2× thresholds (custom)
- Set the weekly hour thresholds at which overtime and double-time kick in. Hours between the two thresholds are paid at 1.5×; hours above the second threshold are paid at 2×.
